Competition Leotards
When competing, gymnasts prefer long-sleeved leotards as opposed to the sleeveless leotards they wear during practices. This is mainly because long sleeves help to keep arm muscles warm and relaxed and because long sleeved leotards appear more elegant then sleeveless. Competition leotards usually feature many embellishments and are typically very pricey. They can be customized and coaches and gymnasts usually deliberate for months prior to the beginning of competition season. These leotards are a very important part of a gymnasts performance. Confidence is key in gymnastics, so comfort and style are two important aspects that must be considered.
Most international gymnastics competitions are regulated by the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique, or FIG. Detailed dress regulations are listed in the FIG Code of Points and must be followed by all gymnasts. According to this code, women must wear a one-piece leotard and the cut of the leotard at the top of the legs must not go higher than the waist. Gymnasts who do not follow these rules will lose points when judging takes place.
