Practice Leotards
While gymnastics competitions typically have strict dress codes, gymnastics practices have much looser standards for practice clothing. In most cases competitions are chosen by a coach (unless gymnasts are of the elite level), but gymnasts are given the freedom to pick a choose practice leotards. Practice leotards are most often sleeveless and range in style and design. A gymnast will most likely own several leotards, especially if she practices several times during the week. Practice leotards also change in style for the seasons. Gymnasts will opt for thinner fabrics during the hot summers, while wearing the slightly thicker fabrics during the winter months. Gymnasts are not allowed to wear t-shirts or bagging shorts during practice. Relaxed clothing poses several issues. One of the paramount concerns is regarding safety, because loose clothing could get wrapped up in the equipment and also make it harder for coaches to spot the gymnast during dangerous skills. Additionally, gymnasts must achieve specific body positions, so it is important for coaches to be able to see the gymnast’s form. Many gyms may also tighten the practice attire requirements as gymnasts move up in levels, as precise positioning becomes increasingly important. The video below demonstrates the wide range of practice leotard styles that can be seen in the gym.
